Sorry about the bad quality... I don't have a scanner yet, so I had to settle with using the webcam to take a photo. I'll replace it eventually.

**********EDIT***************

i was looking around my gallery and noticed that I said "i will replace it eventually" ... lol well i guess i completely forgot about it!! but here it is now - the very old picture, but scanned this time.

Done with: coloured pencils and a tiny bit of oil pastel

...just came across this one.  Bet it looks even better with good scan quality...!  I'm not too good with water or animals (yet).  Keep up the good work!

hah this is such an old picture! but thank you for commenting. Good luck practicing animals and water. I recommend using good quality reference photos to help figure them out.

Awesome! I don't know how you manage to do realistic water; I'll put my hands around that very soon though ;)
And thanks for sharing, this is very good!

oops sorry, just realised i was talking about the wrong pic X_x
well the water in THIS picture is realistic because... well i copied a reference for starters, and then also just leaving light on top of the waves helps too i guess.... can't really explain ^^; but i'm sure you could do just as good anyway :P
thanks ^^

thanks ^^ lol realistic water is pretty much just lots of blue, getting darker the deeper it is and lighter near the top. The difficulty is making the creatures IN the water look like they're in water, rather than colouring the water itself :D

I guess! because the animal is absorbing the light of its environment and it must reflect it! but if you have a good reference it won't be so hard, I suppose :)

Amazing sense of motion you've created and you have a really good sense of lighting. Are you a self taught artist? or have you had lessons? :D

Well that gives me alot of confidence in how I could improve my art to be as amazing as yours. How long have you been drawing?
I myself have been drawing wolves for 3 years this year, but only using coloured pencils just over a year.

umm well i've been drawing animals (as in cats, dogs and frogs and, i suppose, wolves and horses, though that's more of a recent thing) for .... well this is my 4th year (with coloured pencils.) before that i used to use lead, but they weren't all that realistic. In year 8 (i'm in year 11 now) my grandma sent me a book of drawing with coloured pencils and soon i was drawing all the time, impressing all my friends, etc. and i've been sorta improving since then, though now i feel like i've come to a dead end (for now anyway.)
oh, but i ALWAYS used photo references - i was hopeless without them. It's only been a recent thing (since joining DA actually; so about a year and a half) of drawing (mainly horses) without a reference photo.

wow sorry about the long comment ^^;

So I guess the more time I spend in the next couple of years on colouring will hopefully give me more experience to colour with such technique. I did use to draw dragons but I've never submited any. I don't think you've hit a dead end, each time you put up one more piece of art you seem to improve so much.

One thing I really want to learn, although I'm not sure how, is to create a light source in the work and portray it in the light and shade in the fur for example.

I usually use photos for reference, but I usually use a combination of about 5 photos to create a different pose.

yeah definately, the more you draw the more you improve ^^
yeah whenever i draw a put a little sun somewhere and work off that :D
there's still stuff i need to learn about lighting too. do you ever look at things from an artist's point of view? like the shading and stuff? i look at people's faces all the time while they're talking to me and think about the lighting and shading on their face. i look at grass and am totally repelled by it because all that very fine shading and irritating blades of grass which are killer and impossible to draw. lol.

I might try that ^^
Yeah I get that wierd thing that makes me suddenly see everyone, usually in graphite, as a pencil drawing, and then I feel like drawing them :D . Due to the lighting thing, I'm still a little hesatint (can't spell ^^ ) about drawing backgrounds, and of course its ability to make you suddenly feel so irritated.
